that's the spirit: ghostly music videos

And now, for your viewing pleasure, I present to you my favorite ghostly music videos...

Slipknot- Vermilion Part 1:

A beautiful, lonely ghost awakens to wander among us another day, tortured with her inability to touch humanity. Still, she wanders and watches the everyday world in frustration, complete with headbanging & hair-pulling, trying to reach out to the living...

Slipknot- Vermilion Part 2:
A companion video to the vid above (with a more melancholy rendering of the song), this is not your usual ghostly, this is a more unsettling, eerie Japanese-esque kind of ghostly, as the body of a beautiful dead (or is she undead?) girl is reanimated by unnatural breezes.

Oingo Boingo- Stay:

Oingo Boingo teams up with some ghostly waltzing spirits (and some midgets!) to play new wave cupid to a pair of 1940's lovers. Yes, it sounds crazy, and it is, in the best of ways. My fave part is at 3:06, when the little old lady sings to her little old man the line: "won't you stay with me one more day..." awww.

White Stripes- Blue Orchid:
I'd say that that is definitely a haunted house. I'm not sure whether ethereal tippytoe girl is a ghost, but I suspect she may be haunting the place after being trampled by a horse in the coolest video ending ever. Jack White looks like the illegitimate lovechild of Jack Sparrow and the devil. And Meg White dreamily bashing china with a demented smile is lovely too (and bonus points for creepy-cute baby!)

Rockwell- Somebody's Watching Me:
OK, Rockwell is living in one f'ed up house. He's got a blood-spraying shower, a veiled-in-black ghost lady spinny-dancing all over the place, a devil dog, a creepy-guy-in-diaper carrying a pig's head on a silver tray (wha?), an inexplicably half-under-the-bed woman, and of course, that no-good mailman. Oh, and somebody's watchin' him, AND he's got no privacy.

Tiger Army- Incorporeal:

In this video for a song about a ghost's lament, a departed spirit haunts his lost love, watching her every move like a sort of rockabilly Patrick Swayze without the sculpting wheel... sweet, ghostly, and retro romantic.

Michael Jackson- Ghosts:
MJ ripping off his face is a little umm, creepy, all things considered... but throw in the Disney-Haunted-Mansion-esque setting, some awesomely moldy, dusty old ghosts getting jiggy with it, and killer FX by the master Stan Winston, you've got a ghostly winna. The skull-busting move at the beginning is a nice touch. Here is an excerpt of the 30+ minute short film...

So, what are your favorite spooky videos?

tunes of the dead

For your viewing entertainment, I present: my top 5 zombie music videos of all time.... enjoy!

Gob- I Hear You Calling: this vid has cheerleading & soccer playing zombies, great zombie makeup, zombies losing body parts, and some humor thrown in... and it's a great song to boot....

Naked Ape- Fashion Freak: have you ever had a fantasy about sexy rotting zombies washing your car seductively? These guys obviously have. Bonus points for the cool 80's synthesized beat and the zombie chihuahua.... yes, a zombie chihuahua!

Misfits- Scream: a classic from the gods of horror punk. Old skool b&w zombie mayhem running rampant in a hospital, with gore galore, and of course starring the Misfits themselves as the hungry undead, it doesn't get any better than this...

Peaches feat. Iggy Pop- Kick It: what do you get when the always-awesome Peaches teams up with the legendary Iggy Pop? A badass and hilarious song, and a highly entertaining video complete with shambling zombie masses...

Phantom Planet- Big Brat: watch the zombie fanatics zombie themselves up, then watch their 'film' about the zombie apocalypse, the ending of which features a very sweet zombie love story awww....

And finally, special bonus mention goes to....

Michael Jackson- Thriller: although it is the most obvious choice for any zombie related list, there is no denying that MJ's undead extravaganza was a groundbreaking phenomena for zombies AND for music videos. Even today, it still stands up to the CGI and effects laden films of modern times, and looks fantastic. And everyone loves the zombie dance!

Well, that's it for zombies, stay tuned for more video posts!

true sounds of liberty

This past Monday I got a real old skool punk rock treat- I got to see TSOL perform live right here in El Paso.

For those of you who remember True Sounds Of Liberty & the early 80's punk rock scene, it was just as good as you'd think it would be, and hella exciting to see them live in 2009. It was a total blast from my punk rock past. For those of you who don't remember them, they are a legendary Orange County punk band from way back. Here they are playing 'Darker My Love' in the cult classic movie Suburbia:

We lucked out & got to meet singer Jack Grisham after the show, which was such an OMG moment for me. He still looks fantastic- sexy as Hell (those eyes!!)- and he was so supernice! It always rocks when your music idols turn our to be legitimately cool people. The show was amazing, and it got me so fired up. Now if only Black Flag & the Dead Kennedys would come to town doh....

The look on my face there is totally such an 'omigod Jack Grisham is touching me' fangirl look! Heh heh.

EP's punkers showed up in full force and gave the love. It was awesome. All the bands said they loved the El Paso vibe and had a blast playing for our crowd, which makes mama proud!

clicquot

My Sis-In-Law showed me the most beautiful thing today. It's an amazing rendition of a song called Clicquot, a sorrowful song about the widow Clicquot mourning her beloved Francois.

The band is Beirut, and the singer is Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear. Awesome.

I just want to hang out and watch these people all day long:

rockabilly will never die

Those of you who know me well know that I am a total rockabilly girl.

While I do love a whole lot of different kinds of music- I was raised by/around musicians, I was extensively exposed to everything from The Beatles to Bach to Black Sabbath at a very young age- rockabilly music is the music that has my heart.

It's my earliest musical memory (I can clearly remember sitting at my Pop's feet, playing on the floor with my toys while he strummed on his acoustic guitar & sang Bobby Fulller and Buddy Holly and Ricky Nelson tunes) It's the soundtrack of a very innocent and happy time for me. It's the music that fills me up with excitement & joy. It's my go-to music when I am needing a spark of life in a dreary world.

(click the pic for details & ordering info on all pieces)

Rockabilly & pin up fashion has gotten very trendy in recent years, and this is a double-edged sword switchblade for me.

On the one hand, it can be annoying when something that you genuinely love is turned into a trend... you'll see people who have never even heard the word 'rockabilly' before suddenly sporting the head-to-toe rockabilly style bought right off the mannequin. It's one thing to incorporate some fun & trendy pieces to your own personal style, but quite another to sport a full-on trend costume with no personal point of view, just because it's currently cool.

On the other hand, it means that the availability of really great retro & rockabilly inspired pieces is high, and the prices lower because of it. Which means that I can suddenly find all kinds of things retro and rockabilly easily, and at good prices to boot. So I try to look at it as a blessing from the fashion gods, and grab up what I can while it's hot, so that even after the trendsters move on to something else I'll have reaped some really nice stuff in that trendy period. Bonus.

That said, I love absolutely everything in this set, everything. I only wish I could afford to buy it all! One thing I love about mid-century fashion is how flattering it is to a woman's natural curves. These are not clothes that you have to starve yourself to get into- nay, think about the hot, curvy bods of Marilyn, Bettie, and Rita and you'll see how these clothes are designed for sexy curvaceousness. Very feminine. These are clothes for boobs and a butt.

The dress was the starting point here but as soon as I added the guitar I couldn't help but think of the sweet & sassy looks of Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee. The rest came from there. I think my favorite piece is that retro tattoo inspired parasol. I've been wanting to get a nice parasol to battle the blazing desert sun rays we have out here, and if I could afford it right now this one (or maybe the version in nude, can't decide which I like better) from Happy Trails would be the one. Love it. And those shoes are so great, and come in several really sweet colors. If they had the red pair in my size I'm afraid I would have ordered them on the spot, heh.

As spring and summer have progressed I have also been dreaming of wearing big, flowery blooms in my hair like the blood-red orchid in this set... in fact, I recently ordered a big red rose and a set of smaller white gardenias- both for the hair- from Daddy-O's and I can't wait to get them. I'll wear them to glam up my favorite skinny jeans or to add some retro allure to one of my summer sundresses. Also I have been looking for a sexy little red purse and fell in love with this one and could not resist it. Bad Shady!

And now cats & kittens, I'll leave you with these immortal words from the Stray Cats:

Well my baby and me went out late Saturday night,

I had my hair piled high, my baby just looked so right,
Well, pick you up at ten gotta have you home by two,
Momma don't know what I got in store for you,
But that's all right cause we're looking as cool as can be.

And you know what comes next...

put another dime in the jukebox baby

Last night I got to see Joan Jett & the Blackhearts at the El Paso Street Festival, yay!
Joan Jett was one of my earliest icons & inspirations, and I have pretty much worshipped her since I was a kid. I had seen her before- both in concert, and in the role of Columbia in the Rocky Horror Show on Broadway- but I'd jump at any chance to see her, anytime.

She pumped up the crowd with the same intensity as the brilliant fireworks show that lit up the sky just before she took the stage. She rocked it. The crowd loved her. But then, they always do- she's such a kickass, intense artist. The band did walk offstage for a moment when the crowd got too wild and someone threw a full beer can at the stage, but once they settled it down she came back out and handled it like a lady- a lady in black leather that can kick your motherf**king ass. I loved her look- she was totally rockin' the jet(t)-black shag & full-on leather style she made iconic in the 80's, and damn, does this woman ever age?? She looked HOT.

Since I didn't have my better camera with me, and I am a shorty shorty, it was pretty difficult to get any really decent pics or videos. I did my best, standing on my tippytoes w my camera extended high above my head, getting jostled around by the frisky (and partially inebriated) crowd... anyway, the quality may not be the greatest, but at least it captured the vibe of the show. Which was: ROCKIN'! Viva La Jett!
